Metabolic Media (a design collaboration between Nobel scientist Sir John. E. Walker and designer Rachel Wingfield of Loop.ph Design Research Studio) have created a piece as part of a exhibit entitled Nobel Textiles. In short, textile designers were teamed up with Nobel Prize winning scientists to design energy producing textiles that can be applied to large or small architectural structures in a efficient and aesthetically pleasing way (an alternative to rigid solar panels if you will).
The future is bright if large tensile surfaces and building facades could be used to harness the sun’s energy using flexible photovoltaics modularly woven into architectural structures. This could provide a lightweight solution for providing buildings with a continuous way of harnessing the suns endless power supply in a dynamic and adaptive way. More images below.
